Diamond Hill Capital’s Large Cap Strategy (Q1 2026 investor letter) said it exited its position in International Paper (NYSE: IP), a packaging and pulp producer, after fundamentals “fell short” of expectations, and it redeployed proceeds into other opportunities. The strategy returned -2.39% net of fees vs. the Russell 1000 Value’s 2.10%.
International Paper has broken ground on a new $225 million packaging facility in Brandon, Mississippi, which is expected to create nearly 150 jobs and replace an older plant in Richland. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves highlighted the project's contribution to the state's economic growth and its role in allowing for income tax reductions. The state-of-the-art facility is anticipated to be completed by late 2027, boosted by years of infrastructure upgrades in Brandon.
International Paper (IP) shares jumped by 4.1% after the company announced its acquisition of Delmarva Corrugated Packaging (DCP), a move designed to enhance its capabilities and market presence. This acquisition is expected to strengthen its footprint and support long-term growth by adding a new facility for sustainable packaging solutions. Despite the recent gain, the stock is down 24% year-to-date and 45.1% below its 52-week high, with previous declines attributed to disappointing Q3 2025 results.
