Waymo secures $5bn term loan to fund robotaxi expansion

Alphabet's Waymo unit closed a $5 billion term loan, its first debt financing. The loan was led by PIMCO, Blackstone and Sixth Street, with Goldman Sachs as bookrunner. Proceeds will support the rollout of robotaxi services in additional U.S. cities and overseas markets such as Singapore. The financing follows a $16 billion equity raise earlier in the year that valued Waymo at $126 billion.

The new debt adds outside financing to Waymo's capital structure, increasing Alphabet's leverage and creating repayment obligations. Analysts note the loan is not linked to the recent 1.1% share‑price decline and is not expected to move the stock in the short term.
