Applied Materials opens $5 billion EPIC Center in Sunnyvale to accelerate AI‑chip R&D

Applied Materials unveiled its Equipment and Process Innovation and Commercialization (EPIC) Center in Sunnyvale, California on Oct. 12 2026. The 600,000‑square‑foot facility represents a $5 billion capital investment and brings together founding partners TSMC, Intel, Samsung, Micron and SK Hynix, plus a slate of equipment and research collaborators. The company says the center will speed the development and commercialization of next‑generation semiconductor technologies needed for AI workloads.

Applied Materials expects the EPIC model to give chipmakers earlier access to new materials and equipment, shortening learning cycles and accelerating volume production. The partnership structure should also provide Applied with visibility into emerging technology challenges, guiding its own R&D spending.
