Azul secures up to 2 billion reais government‑backed loan for jet fuel

Brazilian airline Azul arranged a loan of up to R$2 billion (about US$397 million) that can be used only to purchase jet fuel for domestic flights. The financing is covered by the federal government through the ABGF and the Export Guarantee Fund and is part of Azul’s restructuring plan. CFO Antonio Carlos Garcia said high fuel prices are slowing recovery and squeezing margins, with Q2 volumes down more than 10% year‑on‑year. The loan follows a recent BNDES loan and American Airlines’ warrant exercise that gave it a 7.9% stake in Azul.

The loan strengthens Azul’s liquidity and financial flexibility but adds to its debt load, which may affect leverage ratios and investor risk assessments (the company’s notice states the financing reinforces its liquidity).
