China clears Alibaba AI models for Apple Intelligence on iPhone Duo

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology approved Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen and Tongyi Wanxiang AI models for integration into Apple Intelligence on the upcoming iPhone Duo and other iPhone models. The approval coincides with Tim Cook's visit to China and Apple’s plan to open iPhone Duo pre‑orders on October 16, with shipments starting October 23. Apple Intelligence is already available in Hong Kong but was previously delayed in mainland China due to regulatory constraints.

The clearance removes a regulatory barrier, allowing Apple to offer AI‑driven features such as image generation and chatbots to Chinese iPhone users, which could boost demand for the iPhone Duo in one of Apple’s largest markets. Alibaba gains a major domestic deployment for its AI models, expanding its commercial footprint in China.
