Tesla reinvests $786 million in tariff refunds to expand U.S. production, lifting energy margin to 33.1%

Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja said the company recognized US$786 million in tariff refunds in Q3 2026 and is using the cash to expand domestic manufacturing capacity. The refunds reduced energy segment cost of revenues by US$526 million and automotive cost of revenues by US$260 million, helping energy gross margin jump from 20.4% to 33.1% sequentially. Taneja listed robotaxis, Optimus robots, solar manufacturing, AI compute infrastructure and a semiconductor fab as the intended investment areas.

The margin boost improves the energy segment’s profitability for the quarter, while the reinvestment signals continued capex growth in U.S. factories, which could affect future production capacity and cash flow forecasts (the company’s own filing notes the margin rise).
