POSCO Future M signs $4.5 bn long‑term LFP cathode supply deal with Samsung SDI

POSCO Future M, the battery‑materials unit of South Korea’s POSCO Holdings, agreed to supply Samsung SDI with lithium‑iron‑phosphate cathode material worth about KRW 6 trillion (≈$4.5 bn). The contract covers roughly 400,000 tons of LFP cathode from 2027 through 2032, more than double the 190,000 tons agreed in August. The deal expands the partnership to include LMO cathodes and synthetic graphite anodes and is intended to boost POSCO’s factory utilization and meet U.S. non‑PFE sourcing rules.

POSCO Future M says the new volume will improve its capacity utilization and raw‑material sourcing. Samsung SDI can use the secured supply to satisfy U.S. non‑PFE battery‑material requirements.

  • 1The agreement is valued at approximately KRW 6 trillion (≈$4.5 bn).
  • 2POSCO Future M will deliver close to 400,000 tons of LFP cathode material to Samsung SDI between 2027 and 2032.
  • 3The new volume more than doubles the 190,000 tons covered by the August 2026 agreement.
  • 4POSCO expects its supply volume to Samsung SDI to rise by about 45% compared with the existing contract.
  • 5The companies plan to expand cooperation into LMO cathodes and synthetic graphite anodes.
  • 6POSCO Future M is investing roughly KRW 357 billion (≈$266.7 m) in a new synthetic‑graphite anode plant in Vietnam.
