FDA grants Orphan Drug Designation to Hutchmed’s sovleplenib for primary ITP

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration awarded Orphan Drug Designation to Hutchmed’s oral Syk inhibitor sovleplenib for the treatment of primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). The designation makes the drug eligible for up to seven years of U.S. market exclusivity if approved, along with tax credits and user‑fee waivers. Hutchmed also noted that new drug applications for sovleplenib are under review in China for ITP and another autoimmune indication. The announcement was followed by a modest decline in Hutchmed’s share price.

The exclusivity incentive could significantly increase future revenue potential for sovleplenib, according to Hutchmed’s press release. The stock fell 3.48% to $13.32 at market close, reflecting immediate market reaction.
