Solana launches Alpenglow consensus upgrade, cutting finality to 150 ms

On October 21 2026 Solana’s core engineering team Anza activated the Alpenglow consensus protocol on mainnet‑beta, replacing the TowerBFT system. The upgrade reduced transaction finality from about 12.8 seconds to roughly 150 milliseconds, a change described as the largest blockchain upgrade since Ethereum’s Merge. Anza CEO Brennan Watt said the upgrade was completed while the network remained live.

The faster, deterministic finality is expected to make Solana more attractive for high‑frequency trading and decentralized‑finance applications, potentially increasing demand for the SOL token. Anza’s statement suggests the upgrade could improve deposit crediting times for exchanges and payment confirmations for merchants.

  • 1Finality was reduced to about 150 milliseconds, down from roughly 12.8 seconds.
  • 2Validators retired TowerBFT at slot 459,653,000 on October 21 at ~14:00 UTC.
  • 3The upgrade was developed and deployed by Anza, the core engineering team behind Solana.
  • 4Brennan Watt, CEO of Anza, called the upgrade the largest and most ambitious since the Ethereum Merge.
  • 5Validators switched to the new protocol while keeping the existing ledger and network availability.
  • 6Future upgrades such as Rotor, geographically aware leader rotations, and Quantumglow are planned but have no committed dates.
