Barclays to cut 5,000 jobs by year‑end 2026 as AI drives cost‑saving programme

Barclays announced it will eliminate about 5,000 positions – roughly 5% of its global workforce – by the end of 2026, citing artificial‑intelligence‑driven efficiency gains. The bank has already removed 1,000 roles and plans the remaining cuts in the second half of the year. In the same earnings release the bank reported pre‑tax profit of £2.3 billion for Q3, a 12% year‑on‑year increase, and launched a £500 million share‑buyback.

Barclays says the restructuring should generate about £1.1 billion of cost savings by 2027, which could boost future earnings per share and support dividend and buyback capacity. Analysts note that the profit beat was modest and the cuts aim to improve margins, so investors will watch whether the savings materialise.
