BHP reports 19% drop in Q1 copper output while iron ore rises and guidance stays unchanged

BHP Group announced that copper production fell 19% to 400.7 kt in the September 2026 quarter, driven by lower ore grades, maintenance and weather disruptions. Iron ore output rose 4% to 66.5 Mt and steelmaking coal increased 1% to 4.9 Mt. Average realised copper price jumped 53% YoY to US$7.01 per pound. The company kept its FY27 copper production guidance of 1,650‑1,800 kt unchanged and disclosed two fatal incidents at its mines.

The unchanged FY27 copper guidance signals that BHP expects to recover the short‑term volume loss, so investors should not anticipate a revision to full‑year earnings from copper. The 53% rise in copper price may partially offset the lower output, supporting near‑term profitability.
