Broadcom to lend up to $42 billion to Anthropic, creating its largest AI chip customer

Broadcom announced a financing arrangement that can provide Anthropic with as much as $42 billion to fund its AI‑compute infrastructure. The loan, structured as convertible notes, would cover roughly one‑third of Anthropic’s five‑year $125.2 billion lease for TPU‑type chips and is expected to make Anthropic Broadcom’s biggest XPU customer by 2027. The deal was disclosed in Anthropic’s IPO prospectus and includes hardware supply, leasing and a possible conversion of debt into equity. Analysts note the move mirrors Nvidia’s balance‑sheet support for its ecosystem and raises questions about revenue sustainability and conflict of interest.

Seaport Research analyst Jay Goldberg says the financing is a response to Nvidia’s balance‑sheet backing of its chip demand, suggesting Broadcom is trying to protect market share. Rothschild & Co managing partner Robert Leitao cautions that the revenue base may struggle to support the scale of financing. The loan could lock in future AI‑semiconductor revenue for Broadcom but also adds credit risk to its balance sheet.
