American Electric Power signs up to $4 billion purchase of up to 1.6 GW of Mainspring linear generators

American Electric Power (AEP) agreed to buy up to 1.6 GW of linear generators from Mainspring Energy over the next eight years, a deal that could be worth as much as $4 billion. The first delivery of 190 MW is scheduled for 2024, with roughly 200 MW to be purchased each year thereafter. The generators can run on natural gas, biogas or hydrogen, giving AEP flexible, low‑emission capacity to support growing AI data‑center demand.

The agreement provides AEP with fast‑deployable, low‑emission generation that can firm renewable output and serve AI‑intensive customers, according to the companies. Mainspring gains its largest purchase order to date, potentially boosting its revenue stream.
