Chinese AI firms face severe Nvidia RTX Pro 5500 supply shortfall

Alibaba, Tencent, ByteDance and other Chinese AI and cloud companies reportedly ordered about 6 million Nvidia RTX Pro 5500 chips worth about $70 billion. The buyers expect to receive only roughly 1% of that volume over the next four months because Nvidia cannot expand production fast enough. Nvidia is reportedly directing limited capacity toward more advanced, higher-margin products, while buyers estimate shipments could reach roughly 700,000 units by the end of 2027.

The reported allocation would sharply limit near-term access to Nvidia hardware for Chinese AI developers and leave Nvidia unable to convert the full reported order value into deliveries. For Nvidia, capacity would instead remain focused on other products and customers; the order and delivery figures have not been confirmed by Nvidia or the buyers.

  • 1Chinese AI and cloud firms reportedly ordered about 6 million RTX Pro 5500 chips, valued at about $70 billion at more than $11,000 per chip.
  • 2The buyers expect to receive only some tens of thousands of chips, or roughly 1%, within the next four months.
  • 3A key buyer's internal estimate puts potential Nvidia deliveries at roughly 700,000 RTX Pro 5500 units by the end of 2027.
  • 4Alibaba, Tencent and ByteDance are among the Chinese customers named in the reported orders.
  • The order totals and expected deliveries come from unnamed sources and have not been confirmed by Nvidia or the buyers.
  • A separate report cited by one material put earlier combined orders from ByteDance, Alibaba and Tencent at more than 3 million cards worth more than $35 billion, while the later report describes total Chinese demand of about 6 million cards worth about $70 billion; the materials do not establish whether these are overlapping or separate orders.
