MSCI adopts new non‑operating company rules that could remove Strategy from its global indexes

MSCI announced it will adopt a methodology that excludes non‑operating companies from its Global Investable Market indexes. The rules use operating‑asset thresholds and five financial‑ratio screens, and companies that fail at least four of the five tests could be removed after two consecutive annual filings. Strategy (MSTR) was flagged in MSCI’s simulation and its shares fell 5.87% to $143.24 on Oct. 14 as the market reacted.

If Strategy is removed, funds that track MSCI indexes would have to sell the shares, which could pressure the stock price and reduce passive‑investment demand.

  • 1MSCI will release the final list of companies facing exclusion on Nov 11, with removals taking effect on Nov 30, 2026.
  • 2Strategy’s shares fell 5.87% to $143.24 on Oct 14.
  • 3MSCI’s simulation using May 2026 data identified Strategy as a possible deletion from the MSCI ACWI IMI.
  • 4Funds tracking MSCI’s Global Investable Market indexes hold about 13 million Strategy shares, representing 3.1% of its basic shares outstanding.
  • 5JPMorgan analysts estimated that Strategy’s exclusion could trigger roughly $2.8 billion of selling.
