MSCI proposes reclassifying Indonesia from emerging to standalone market

MSCI announced a consultation to downgrade Indonesia from emerging‑market to standalone status, citing persistent opacity in shareholding structures and suspected coordinated trading. The proposal triggered a sharp sell‑off in Jakarta, with the index falling double‑digit percentages on the day. MSCI will decide on the final reclassification by the end of June 2027, after a feedback period that closes on 30 April 2027.

MSCI said it expects to proceed with the reclassification unless the consultation shows clear material improvements. UBS estimates the move could generate about $4 billion of passive outflows, with active investors potentially adding up to $15 billion.
