Merck opens molybdenum precursor plant in Eumseong, South Korea

Merck inaugurated a new facility in Eumseong, North Chungcheong Province that produces molybdenum dioxide dichloride (MoO₂Cl₂) for advanced semiconductor manufacturing. The plant is part of a €600 million (≈$674.2 million) South Korean investment plan and will initially supply 3‑D NAND flash makers such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. CEO Benjamin Hein visited for the opening and highlighted the integrated supply system that pairs the precursor with Merck’s CK Vapor delivery equipment, targeting material utilization efficiency above 99%.

The plant gives local chipmakers a stable, high‑purity source of molybdenium precursors, which could accelerate adoption of the material in 3‑D NAND and later DRAM and logic chips, potentially lowering cost and improving performance. Merck expects demand for next‑generation semiconductor materials to double within five years, making the new hub critical for its growth in the Asian market.

  • 1The opening ceremony for the MoO₂Cl₂ production facility was held on 22 October 2026 in Eumseong.
  • 2Merck is investing €600 million (approximately $674.2 million) in South Korea, announced in 2021.
  • 3The plant will produce molybdenum dioxide dichloride, a specialty precursor for CVD and ALD processes.
  • 4The integrated solution combines the precursor with Merck’s CK Vapor delivery system, designed for material utilization efficiency exceeding 99%.
  • 5Benjamin Hein, CEO of Merck Electronics, attended the opening and emphasized South Korea as a key market for semiconductor materials.
  • 6The first target application is 3‑D NAND flash wiring, with plans to expand to DRAM word lines and logic chips.
