BioVie reports Phase 2 Parkinson’s trial showing symptom improvement in inflamed subgroup

BioVie Inc. presented data from its Phase 2 SUNRISE‑PD trial of the anti‑inflammatory drug bezierstim in early‑stage Parkinson’s patients. In a prespecified subgroup with platelet counts above 230 × 10⁹/L, patients receiving the drug showed statistically significant gains in both motor and non‑motor MDS‑UPDRS scores compared with placebo. Across the full 57‑patient cohort, treated patients were 6.25‑fold more likely to achieve a clinically meaningful improvement, while adverse events were lower than in the placebo arm.

The company said the findings support continued development of bezierstim and suggest the drug may affect the underlying disease process. Investors may view the data as a catalyst for future funding rounds or partnership opportunities.

  • 1The SUNRISE‑PD trial enrolled 57 patients in a randomized, double‑blind, placebo‑controlled design.
  • 2Approximately half of the participants had platelet counts above 230 × 10⁹/L, defining the high‑inflammation subgroup.
  • 3In that subgroup, bezierstim improved MDS‑UPDRS Part I non‑motor scores by –1.62 versus +1.86 for placebo (p = 0.0124).
  • 4In the same subgroup, motor scores (Part III) changed by –1.32 versus +1.26 for placebo (p = 0.0265).
  • 5Overall, 25% of bezierstim patients achieved meaningful improvement versus 4% on placebo, a 6.25‑fold likelihood increase.
  • 6Treatment‑emergent adverse events occurred in 39.3% of bezierstim patients and 51.7% of placebo patients, with no severe or serious events reported.
