Samsung reportedly lines up AMD and Nvidia HBM production at second Texas fab

Samsung plans to make high-bandwidth memory base dies for AMD and Nvidia at its second Texas plant, according to reports citing Maeil Business Newspaper. Construction is expected to start this month, with the facility using Samsung’s 2nm process and beginning mass production in 2030. The plant is reportedly fully booked, with most planned output committed to AMD, although Samsung has not confirmed the customer agreements.

The reported facility could add a US source of HBM base dies for AMD and potentially Nvidia while giving Samsung Foundry major advanced-node customers. The commitments remain unconfirmed, and one report says AMD accounts for virtually all capacity while Nvidia is still evaluating Samsung’s processes.

  • 1The second Texas facility is expected to cover about 2.7 million square feet, or roughly 1.5 times the size of Samsung’s first Texas plant.
  • 2Construction is scheduled to begin this month, equipment installation is expected to start in 2029, and production is slated for 2030.
  • 3The plant will use Samsung’s 2-nanometer manufacturing process and has reportedly secured orders for all planned output, with most volume allocated to AMD.
  • 4Samsung would produce HBM logic base dies in Texas and pair them with DRAM made at its South Korean facilities.
  • 5Samsung declined to comment on the reported customer commitments.
  • Reports differ on Nvidia’s status: several describe Samsung as producing HBM parts for Nvidia, while one says AMD accounts for virtually all capacity and Nvidia remains uncommitted.
  • Samsung has not publicly confirmed the reported customer commitments.
