Thousands of customer service workers face the ax as AI takes over
Bloomberg reports that companies including Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Microsoft, Uber and Hyatt are expanding AI chat and phone systems that handle routine customer service, reducing call-center headcount. Commonwealth Bank cut hundreds of chat-support roles and saved tens of millions annually, while Microsoft reduced staff from about 50,000 to 40,000 and said AI saves about $750 million per year. Uber cut 10% of customer service jobs.
