Replacing Insulin Cells Works. Keeping The Cells Alive Is the Trick
AVAI Bio, Vertex, and Sana are developing treatments for Type 1 diabetes by replacing insulin-producing beta cells. Vertex's trial showed 10/12 patients stopped using insulin, but all require immunosuppression. Sana's gene-edited cells evaded immune detection. AVAI Bio's joint venture, Insulinova, is testing encapsulated beta cells with Ospedale San Raffaele. No trials or timelines have been announced.
