Rio Tinto signs farm‑in to earn up to 80% of LCL Resources’ Liam u copper‑gold project in PNG

Rio Tinto and LCL Resources have executed a binding term sheet that lets Rio acquire an initial 51% interest in the Liam u copper‑gold project by spending at least AU$6 million on exploration over five years. Rio can raise its stake to 80% by either investing an extra AU$40 million or by confirming a mineral resource of at least 1 million tonnes of copper (or equivalent) and completing a scoping study. LCL will stay as operator and will be paid a fee equal to up to 10% of Rio’s exploration outlay. The agreement awaits approval from Papua New Guinea authorities and expires on 30 September 2027 if conditions are not met.

LCL’s share price jumped more than 23% after the announcement, reflecting market optimism about the partnership. Rio Tinto’s shares slipped modestly in Sydney and London, indicating a neutral short‑term reaction to the capital commitment. The deal gives Rio a foothold in a high‑potential PNG project while providing LCL with funding and a fee stream.
