Alstom wins €95 million to retrofit Irish Rail’s fleet with ETCS Level 1

Alstom signed contracts with Iarnród Éireann to fit European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 1 equipment on up to 176 existing rail vehicles. The agreement, valued at about €95 million, covers the full scope from engineering and production to installation, testing, commissioning and ongoing service. The contracts were signed in Dublin on 13 October 2026 by Alstom’s Europe region head Andrew DeLeone and Irish Rail chief executive Mary Considine. The work is part of Ireland’s Train Protection System National Rollout Programme and will be carried out from Alstom facilities in Dublin.

The retrofit will expand Alstom’s revenue stream in Ireland and increase its local footprint, creating skilled jobs and supporting future talent development, according to the company’s statements. The contracts also move Ireland’s rail network toward a unified signalling standard, which could improve safety and reliability for operators and passengers.
