Rio Tinto plans Quebec AP60 expansion to increase low-carbon aluminum output

Rio Tinto plans a $1.5 billion expansion of its AP60 aluminum operation in Quebec. The project is due to be completed by the end of 2026 and would raise output of lower-carbon primary aluminum for industrial customers.

The project would increase Rio Tinto's low-carbon aluminum capacity and reduce emissions relative to older Arvida smelting technology. That changes the company's available supply for transportation, construction, electrical and consumer-goods buyers.

  • 1Rio Tinto's planned Quebec project carries a $1.5 billion investment.
  • 2The expansion would add around 160,000 metric tons per annum of primary aluminum capacity when completed by the end of 2026.
  • 3Total AP60 output at Complexe Arvida would reach about 220,000 MPTA under the plan.
  • 4The project is expected to cut emissions by approximately 290,000 MPTA versus the older Arvida technology.
