Richemont and Signet in advanced talks to join consortium bid for De Beers

Swiss luxury group Richemont and U.S. jeweler Signet Jewelers are in advanced discussions to join the Global Diamond Consortium, the preferred bidder for Anglo American's 85% stake in De Beers. The consortium, led by former De Beers CEO Gareth Penny, is targeting a purchase price of roughly $1 billion, below De Beers' $2.3 billion carrying value after three impairments. Botswana, which holds the remaining 15% of De Beers, may increase its ownership to about 25% as part of the transaction.

If Richemont and Signet join the bid, they could secure a foothold in the natural‑diamond supply chain, potentially stabilising demand for their luxury jewellery businesses. The deal would also reshape ownership of De Beers, affecting future pricing and production dynamics in the diamond market.
