LyondellBasell to sell Houston refinery site to Valero for $320.5 million

LyondellBasell announced an agreement to transfer its former Houston refinery and related assets to Valero Energy. The $320.5 million transaction will move the 700‑acre site, along with its operations, environmental and employee obligations, to Valero. The companies expect the deal to close by the end of 2026, and Valero plans to bring back 165,000 bpd of light‑sweet crude capacity by late 2027. LyondellBasell CEO Peter Vanacker said the sale supports the chemical maker’s shift away from refining and will keep the workforce employed.

The sale provides LyondellBasell with cash from a non‑core asset and reduces its exposure to refining, while Valero gains a strategic Gulf Coast expansion at a modest price. Completion of the deal will add 165,000 bpd of capacity to Valero’s portfolio, potentially boosting its refining margins.
