Japan tests whether carbon pulled from seawater can fuel planes
Hitachi, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and Japan Airlines will run a direct ocean capture pilot on Kume Island, Okinawa, using technology from Captura to extract CO2 from seawater. The pilot aims to test operations, energy use, and environmental effects, with Hitachi measuring captured CO2 and electricity for MRV. Longer-term plans include possible E-SAF evaluation, but no fuel production is planned.
